low fuel warning light questions

Judging by trip meter mileage , gauge needle and amount of fuel required to fill the tank , it appears my 88 spg's low fuel light is no longer coming on . I have tried to reach the light to replace or test it with many hand and mirror positions and various tools to no avail and I really don't want to take the instrument panel out . The fuel gauge needle functions normally . Does anyone know a way that I can simulate an almost empty tank from the light circuit's point of view in order to determine where the fault is in the system that activates the light ? I don't want to do this by letting the tank run almost completely empty in order to be certain the circuit is activated , because of the potential problems this brings up such as sucking up debris from the bottom of the tank .
