I haven't yet done everything Saabnut suggested, but the AMM was indeed fouled. It seems the oil leaking into the distributor is preventing sufficient spark. Someone came by and we tried compression-starting it. The engine turned, but didn't start.
I'm not yet ready to (eep!) junk it, so I'm going to see if I can find someone who will let me park it off-street for a while. (Looks like it would take a week just to get the part - to say nothing of how long it would take me to work on it). *sigh*
So that's the news for now. Thanks, everyone.
