This is a 1989 non-turbo 900. There is spark. Since my earlier post I re-gapped the spark plugs. (Some were way too wide.) That still didn't quite fix it.
To recap: There had been a short, which turned out to be the toggle switch which replaced the broken key cylinder. (Otherwise more stuff would have spilled down the keyhole and I'd have to keep replacing it.) Ignition is now happy. And yet... this evening apparently the engine turned once while I was cranking (I didn't notice), but the car's still not quite starting. Almost, almost... but no.
