Derf is probably right (again). Your description sounds a whole lot like an inner driver/tripod bearing problem and doesn't sound much like a T37 transaxle problem but, how is the differential oil? Dry diff's is what kills about 1/2 of these units and clunking probably occurs shortly before it locks up and explodes (don't know, I've never killed a T37 myself). Check the level and fill with whatever is in there. Can be 10w30 motor oil or 80/90 gear oil.
