Hey, welcome to the addiction. Not sure how long you've been into classic 900s, but you have a few options. There are a few different stages of "old" 900s. 1979-1980 was the first phase with classic rally lines and very simple mechanics. 1981 was a lighter, more refined engine and turbo was much more common. 1985 introduced the 16 valve engine and the SPG - the sport version of the 900 turbo, which is probably that rare model that you have been looking for. In 1986, they brought in the convertible, then 1987 changed the front end a bit among other things. 1988 they improved braking and suspension. And 1990-1993 (1994 was only the leftover convertibles) were the golden years for things like upgraded turbo, airbags, improved electronics, handling, and the best color options.
For rare birds, Saab always threw in some special editions to spice things up for the collectors. You find a few around here and there like the 1988 Springtime in Sweden Edition and the 1991 Special Edition, then there are the 1993 and 1994 Commemorative Editions. All awesome and very rare - like between 188 and 500 made of each edition. The cool thing is that Saabs are cheap enough right now that you can buy one and if you don't like it, sell it for what you got it for and try another.
Have fun!
