A 3M product. Get these things, and the holder for them, at auto paint stores or some auto parts stores. They work best when spun at high speed, say in an air die grinder type tool.
They're benign to most metal, at least don't take off anything that could be measured let alone enough to do any harm, even on aluminum.
I don't see how a wire brush could hurt the block, and most particles will blow away and not get inside the bores. Still, at least stuff the piston bores with rags, and the timing chain area.
