I was told by a SAAB specializing machine shop to NEVER use anything abrasive on the engine block. Simply scrape away large chunks w/ a razor blade, and check for occasional pitting.
Abrasives will leave small particles in the piston bore no matter how careful you are.
Also keep a shop vac handy and use it while you scrape. It worked real well for me.
Then I wipe the block surface w/ a rag that has carb or brake cleaner on it to get it super clean and ready to mate to the gasket surface.
I was also told don't bother w/ solvents on the piston crowns cuz it will just get dirty right away again, and there's no real advantage to cleaning piston crowns. Again you're just increasing the odds of getting stuff in the bore. The only exception would be if there's larger chunks that should be gently removed.
Have the head cleaned, checked and pressure tested. I rebuilt mine for an extra $100....at that point you might as well. My gas mileage rocks now!
Cheers!
