I feel your pain. These cars really do grow on you to become as valued as family members. I write only to note the passing of two Saab C900s that passed through my life-- not a passing such as you describe, with hope of rejuvination-- but the ultimate crushing demise of my cars.
Both (my silver '88 3-door, 386k mi; the chassis remnants of a 4 dr '93 NA) had been resting comfortably in their decrepitude at Rocky's Salvage Yard (near Portage, WI). I would visit them occasionally, walking wistfully past or through in order to reap a few organs thoughtlessly donated at the time of commitment (a horn button hear, a speedo cable there, each to keep the FrankenSaab happy) and I thought that's the way it would be forever. But no...
I made a visit on Tuesday, hoping to recover the front rims from the '93 in order to mount some dedicated snow tires. I stood dutifully by the junkyard dog as he lay sleeping while waiting for Rocky, in all the splendor that his coffee-stained T-shirt had to offer as he talked to a customer on the phone. After some time, one of the 4 other employees seated behind the counter ask if they could help me. I stated my goal and one almost immediately made an obscene gesture:
He raised one hand and its arm above the others across his chest and then moved them ever closer together until they met with a certain and clear finality. My (former) cars had been sent to the crusher, there would be no parts for me.
It's a little weird how personally that moment hit me-- I didn't get all teary, don't get me wrong-- I just miss the thought of being able to visit them and maybe snag a bit here and there. I'll get by. The '88 lives on in the sense that it's tranny (now in service for 400k+ miles) continues to propel the FrankenSaab and the fender badges adorn the FS in a way that ought to cause Saab aficionados at least a momentary bit of disconcert ion. The young motor (just broken in at ~100k mi) of the 4 dr '93 also runs strong and well to this day.
I hope all of you who have suffered through this rant will recognize the parallels to human organ donation programs. That was not where I thought this rant would end up when I started, but if it persuades even one of the (3?) readers to have struggled through this too-late post to fill-out that organ donor card, it's worth it.
Long live the C900!
