BTW I have a 85 8V hatchback since 85....very reliable...
I would suggest dividing the problem into half with a couple of quick tests...one is to squirt a bit of Gum Out into the intake manifold via disconnecting one of the 1.4 vacuum lines and quickly reconnecting and try to start. If it does start I would look toward a cold start fuel enrichment problem during cold days. If it coughs I would look for cold start enrichment or fuel delivery problem. If nothing happens look to electrical ignition....
1. Listen for fuel pump operation when turning key to ignition on but not all the way to engine start.....
2. If you don't hear it, check 20 amp fuse #30 (yellow body) in fuse box for blown fuel pump fuse.
3. If fuse is ok, and you did not hear pump in step 1, remove fuel pump relay and test jump socket pin 30 to 87 with short piece of wire. You should hear fuel pumps should start without car running. If you don't hear them then it is power wiring or pump problems.
4. If you hear the pumps running then fuel pump relay or ignition switch wiring is bad.
5. If all of the above is working look to ignition system, in particular the ignition amplifier module next to the charcoal canister, the distributor mag pickup or ignition coil. You must check for spark to be sure....
