Way too much clutch play. What's going on?

One recent morning I stalled it (92 900S CVT 5-speed) getting out of the parking
lot. The reason is that clutch engage-disengage point is now way closer
to the floor than before. I think it was a sudden change, I'd been driving
it almost every day and didn't suspect anything until that morning.
I looked for leaks, nothing, and tried to inspect the linkage as best I
could out there in the street in the winter. Beyond the engagement point
moving 2-3rds of the way down, everything looks, feels, and works fine.
Ideas about what's wrong? Some posts hinted at a spring that keeps
the cylinder in position, my Bentley is kind of vague on what's inside
the clutch MC.
Is this hinting at a complete failure in the near future (like the
whining fuel pump was last winter)?
I'm going to take it into the (indy) Saab place, what should I have them
check or do? Is bleeding the system a good idea? Should I have them
bleed the brakes at the same time?
