Correct on test procedure. 15716 is the front and 15717 is the rear for Ford 1995 Mustang. If your splicing a 4 wire sensor onto a three wire sensor, Just run the ground wire the engine block or related ground. I did this on my 92/900t and it works fine. The way manufacturer prioritize sensors compatibility is through the Ohms resistance of the heater circuit inside the sensor. Example> Subaru will not except a Bosch sensor for a Mustang due to the Bosch higher resistance of it's heater circuit. Bosch is 8 ohms, Subaru is 2-4 ohms. This would send a code. Saab is around 8 ohms and this is why the Bosch / Mustang replacement works so well. Around $45-$50 . I figured this out When working on a Saab 92x and a Subaru outback. Both have Subaru engine and getting away cheaply for splicing in a Bosch just doesn't work, unless it made for Subaru. I can't really say if the other sensors work due to not knowing the heater element ohms. Compare your heater element resistance. Bosch is just a better product and uses rarer metals.
