I believe it's from the end of the plunger however when replacing your head gasket is a good time to install a new chain anyway! You don't have to take the engine out just roll a new LINKED chain in while the head is off. I cut the old one with a mini bolt cutter and tie wire the new one to it, just hold tension on both sides so the chains stay in place to the crankshaft sprocket. There's a tool for staking the link back together but I've done it by holding something heavy against the new link on one side while peening the pins with a real small ball peen hammer on the other side!
