1985 oil cooled turbo: heavy smoke, no shaft play Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Sat, 14 Apr 2012 04:25:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have narrowed down the heavy heavy exhaust smoke on my 1985 to the turbo. I can see that there is some spray oil from the unit around the engine compartment.
When I had it out for a visual inspection, it didn't seem to have any shaft play and spun freely. So I am hoping that it is in decent shape but just that the seal is gone. This car is of the $500 variety so I don't have the ability to put in a replacement turbo right now.
I did see the rebuild kits on Swedish Dynamic. They said this can be done at home since these original Garret T3 turbos don't need re-balanced after rebuild. But then I also saw the reference they had to the "360 degree seal":

So, if the turbo seems "decent" can this 360 seal be replaced without a full rebuild? Or is it an optional part to swap in when one already has the whole thing apart for a rebuild? I guess I am wondering if someone can give advice on if I can just replace this single seal relatively easily or if I need to go for the entire rebuild kit?
If I can do just the single seal, do I need any special tools?
Thanks for any advice
