1992 900T Convertible 5 speed.

A little background to my issue. Over the past couple months, i've been experiencing a little trouble shifting into 5th gear. It was not pop into gear but rather just mush into gear. More recently, I was experiencing a similar issue with 3rd.

Today, I went to go to work, and I shifted into 5th as usual when I went to park. When I got back, the shifter had popped out of 5th, and I had a little struggle getting my key in and getting it back in gear. I'm start driving, and I lose all ability to shift. Any way that I move the shifter is just mushy and doesnt pop into any gear. Finally I was able to get it into 3rd, which it was stuck in and I dropped it off at an auto shop nearby that had decent reviews. I am just curious what could be wrong with the car, and what kind of monetary damage I may be looking at. I usually fix all my car problems myself, but transmission issues are something I am unfamiliar with. I just want to be sure I dont get fleeced by the mechanic.
