Update: Monokote Chrome Mylar Posted by Shaun [Email] |
A few weeks ago posted message re best method to recondition the inside of the rear taillight housings since some have faded. Dref recommended monokote chrome mylar. I ordered from Tower Hobbies. 6 ft roll. Very shiney. Much brighter than HVAC metallic tape I found at Home Depot.
Anyway installed some of this stuff yesterday. First I did the headlight bezels. Figured out how to remove the bezel lenses. One was ready to come off, the other had to work at with a box cutter (along the contact point). Used 3M 1000 grit sandpaper on outside of lenses, then 3M Finesse II polishing compound with drill/Mothers polishing ball. They cleaned up nice. Then, cut the MCM. This stuff, when heated, forms to the surface. I used a hairdryer with 1500W...probably needed more heat, but worked it for a while and the stuff formed to bezel lens. Used 3M glue and reglued lens to bezel. Compared a finsihed bezel to non finished one and the differnence was quite noticable.
On rear, I used the metallic HVAC tape on some of the housings b/c of the very limited area...MCM is hard to work with in tight spots, however, I used on the large inner reflectors and once I put the lens cover back on it was obvious it was going to reflect much more light.
I would probably buy the Tower Hobbies heat gun next time. probably throws out more heat. Plus, it was tough working with the concave lens housings.
All plastic lenses on car have been polished with 3M liquid compound and then the finesse II polishing compound...these product are expensive, but well worth their money
Now, if I could only figure out my fuse 18 short, I would be back on the road.
Dref...thanks for the recommendation on the MCM.
