Thanks for the quick replies: those took all of 12 minutes! That is why this board is amazing!
I have had an older 85 that died the painful death of subframe rot, but mechanically sound. The "new" 85 I have now has been abused in its former life and in need of help (I am overseas and returning to the US in another month to work on it for "vacation"). Before I arrive I am trying to assess what I need to do to get it on the road: 85 has a damaged hatch and hood (but entirely rust free), a burned valve, a smoking turbo, no exhaust, and the interior is shot. Transmission seems "hopefully OK", but hard to tell running on 15 valves with no exhaust!
The 83 is a good price, body is in good shape (no rust: Western US car), interior "average". I can also find a few rusty 85/86 models that have decent internals. I guess I need to wait and get back and better assess the 85 to see what I really need and the best way to get there (of course it is possible if not worth it to demote it to the "parts car": rust free and abused better or worse than the alternatives out there? Hmmm).
Sounds like engine and lots of the mechanicals from an 83 wouldn't be interchangeable, but maybe with a valve job on the 85 (planning on this one first up) then the 83 would be able to provide the rest of what I would need.
