'84 900T - suddenly dies then won't stay running Posted by JohnT [Email] (#1654) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JohnT) on Tue, 22 May 2012 11:42:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a strange problem with my ’84 900T. The car has been running fine until last night driving home from work at 55 mph the car suddenly died and I coasted off to the side of the road. All electrical stuff was working: lights, wipers, windows, dash lights, radio. When I turned the key the car would start normally but as soon as I let go of the key the car would die. Tried this several times, always the same. So I left the car and got a ride home then had the car towed home a couple of hours later. When the tow truck arrived with the car I tried it again; it started and continued running no problem. Well I knew the alternator belts were loose so I tightened them figuring maybe it’s an alternator/charging problem and decided to try driving the car to work again this morning. After about 2 miles same problem - car died suddenly without warning. Afterwards it cranks and starts normally but dies as soon as I let go of the key. All other electrical stuff works. It has a nearly new battery.
So I’m thinking maybe it’s an ignition switch problem but why would the car die while just cruising along? Could it be a relay or voltage regulator? Anyone ever seen this problem before? I sure would appreciate some opinions.
