85 to 88+ axle/hub swap Q's

Due to the amount of work my brakes need on my 85, I think it's pushed me over the edge to doing the 88+ swap. I'm just trying to do all of my research beforehand...
According to the VIN, my 85 has the older/smaller tripod bearings. The donor car I'm hopefully getting parts off of is a 94 vert. I'm just curious if I can make the front axles work? Or if it's not worth my effort. Could I swap my smaller bearings onto the 94 axles? I really don't want to go through all the mess of swapping inner drivers... or, can I use my 85 axles and swap the 94 outer CV? From everything I can understand, the axle shafts themselves are all the same.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
