July 3, 2011 was heading up to Tahoe (200 mile drive) and my alternator quit and stranded me.
This year, July 3, headed up to Tahoe, made it and was backing out of a parking space then "BAM!!". My first thought was that I bumped someone or someone hit me even though I knew it wasn't that.
Tried to pull back into the parking space and the car was not happy with that. Turned out to be my lower control arm snapped - zero rust, no hairline cracks when inspected about a year and a half ago.
Luckily, it was July 3 and not July 4th. Luckily my kids (that now drive) hadn't headed out yet. Luckily I knew where everything I would need was and had them bring it with them. Luckily there was a junkyard on the way where I had them stop to pick up another control arm. Fixed it in under 2 hours.
Wait, what was my point? Oh yeah, my car developed a reverse turn "clunk" about a year ago. I thought it was the bearing thing and was just going to live with it but once I changed the control arm, no more clunk.
Moral of the story - if you just developed the "clunk" it might be your control arm talking to you.
The end.
