If the Battery Icon (alternator light) is not on.... the alternator will not charge. HOWEVER, if you are running about about 2000 rpm, it will charge.

Back with our 85's were new... the wife's bulb burned out and she ran on battery for a week until it would not start. AAA to the rescue, jumper, started, remove jumper and it died... I arrived just in time to see the poor guy do this for the third time with wife behind wheel... So I parked my 85 and told her to drive it to her appointment and I'd take care of this, she leaves. and I experience the jump off engine dies AGAIN... I was.... how do you say it... pissed. ha ha ha. so the next time I was revving it pretty high, 3-4 k and when jumper off it still was running! had guy close hood and I drove off with high R's all the way home. My buddy Gary Knapp the Saab Master at local dealer was called at home and I got that education. The bulb is in series in the ignite circuit, or something like that. It's gotta be ON when the key is in the ON position, and OFF when the engine is running.
