Used primary chains

I have another transmission question. I am replacing the primary sprockets on a transmission with #8 (high gear) primaries. Problem is, when I replaced them, the chain was very stretched. Almost out of spec. I drove it around like this, and they made a lot of noise, even though I had replaced the upper bearing.
I have some nice used chains that are not so stretched, but one of my service manuals specifically says "do not mix chains from different boxes or mix new and used chains". It also says to keep the chains organized (front, middle, and back) because they wear differently. Unfortunately, I've already lost the order of the good used chains I have, so I don't know which position each of them goes in. Most places don't stock new chains, and of course I'm keeping the #8 sprockets (which do not appear worn) so I'm wondering if I can just go for it with used ones and not worry, or whether you recommend buying new. Also, how much does it matter whether they keep their "positions" (front, middle, back)? I could go out and find a set of chains that hasn't been disturbed like this.
