Justin: thanks for the link. I thought I'd been down this road before...
BAAB: To answer the basic question of whether the motor could drive the trans, yes, it likely could. There's nothing particularly special, other than the radically different layouts.
But there is no way it could be made to work in a C900 chassis without an extraordinary amount of work, time, talent and money. Driving the modern trans is only one problem. Assuming you went that far, you still have the problem that, if you tried to put it in the car the way it goes in now (#1 at the firewall), the inner drivers point the wrong way! And if you put it in sideways, like an NG900, you could have saved a ton of money by simply buying a lump out of an NG900. There is nothing to be gained by trying to make the C900 motor fit where an NG900 motor fits perfectly.
If you really, really, really have to have a better trans than the BW35/37, you have a choice:
1) Get a 5-speed
2) get a more modern car.
3) build up a C900 body on an NG900 chassis.
By far, the cheaper and easier options are 1 & 2.
I've seen a LOT of spectacular stuff done in Sweden and Finland (Google Saab EX and Saab CX), including gull wings, pickups, motorboats, etc. all starting from a Saab, so the third is eminently possible, but it'll take a lot of money, time and talent to make it happen.
BTW - if you're going to go with #3, start with an OG 9-3. The trans there is electronically controlled for even better economy...
Owning classic cars means there are some things that we just have to live with. If the classic car is an auto trans C900 or 99, and swapping in a 5-speed isn't an option, then we need to live with what the Trolls gave us.
