If the sloppiness you mention is what you feel in the shifter, it's pretty likely that the rubber bushing at the nose of the shifter assembly is the culprit. When it deteriorates due to oil rot, the motion of the shift rod goes from rotating as you go from 1-2/5-R to going-side-to side. Replacing the bushing tightens it right up.
The reverse KLUNK and jerk might well be a pilot bearing that is starting to seize. Had the same thing in my '89 SPG - went away when I replaced the pilot bearing.
