The reverse idler is almost certainly hosed by the time you have to hold it into reverse. Sometimes the Townshend/flip the lever trick will work, sometimes not.
I would tear those transmissions down - it's never going to be easier than now. See if you have a good reverse gear/reverse idler combo and then bearings, seals, and a new synchro or two (2nd and 3rd), maybe the 1-2 shift fork and you're probably good to go.
If you have the skills to pull the motor and get it all back together and running in another car, you probably have the skills to rebuild the transmission yourself too, with the exception of setting the preload on the pinion bearing assembly... You can either fabricate yourself some tools or find somebody with the right setup and pay them $40 to do it for you... If you don't have the tools to measure the stack height/pinion backlash/etc, just leave all the shims where they were. The shims are mostly there to account for subtle differences in the castings, so they shouldn't need to change when you reassemble everything, as long as everything is going back in the case it came out of.
Good luck!
