Pinion bearing whine is best heard at higher speeds on even roads and it is heard as soon as you give it throttle and goes away as soon as you let off on the throttle.
So you can make it come and go as you want by pressing and releasing the gas pedal.
All depending on how faint it is (drivers have different perception and hearing)you might be able to go a lot further but changing transmissio oil would be a good start to prolong the life if it hasn't been done already.
