After more analysis, it seems to be more audible at low RPMs in 4th and 5th while accelerating. It is not really audible at RPMs higher than 2000 in 4th or 5th gear. It only whines slightly on acceleration. Never deceleration.
Lastly it whines in the lower gears on deceleration.
Obviously the transmission is on the way out. I'll refill the oil seeing if that helps at all.
SWEDECAR- on an 1989 gearbox is there a drainplug? or is this the year that I would have to unbolt the differential cover to drain the oil?(the gearbox does have an oil dipstick if that makes any difference)
