I got the shifter housing back in correctly. With RS's pictures and explanation I was able to get a better idea of what's involved.
I'm sure my explanation lacks precision but what I think I did was this:
1) left the stick shift screwed in 2) took off the three nuts off the shifter housing mounting, 3) titlted the housing with the underside of the housing facing the passenger side. 4) took off the plastic plate and poked around, 5) I played with turning the key to see how the reverse lock out lever flipped in and out of the shaft notch and discovered I needed to move the shift shaft back towards to firewall (by pushing it a little) to get the notch to line up with the reverse lever. 6) then I put the plastic piece back on the bottom and gently rolled it right side up and back into the three bolt mounts. &) Tightened down the three nuts. Did it work? Yes!!! I could put it into reverse and pull the key out!!!
I put everything back together and the driver seat and went for a drive. It's good to go with solid shifting since I put the rubber bushing in! No more feeling for the gears like the transmission has gone screwy.
Like every project in a SAAB I didn't think this would be so difficult. But now I know how it's done. I think I understand why my 1988 spg is lacking the reverse lock out -- someone got frustrated trying to put it back together and tore the lever out.
Thank you RS for your invaluable pictures and taking the time to do those!! And thank you Dave24 for offering to let me borrow the wing nut tool.
A little patience and help from the guys on this site go a long way. This has been a successful SAAB story!!
Okay, I do have one new development that I did not have before. Now when I open my door (without the key in the ignition) the buzzer goes off. I can live with the for now.
Signed,
Happy to drive my 8 valve again.
