Lucky the weather is nice and I have the shifter assembly from my late, lamented '88 SPG in the garage.
Here's a photo of an upside-down shifter assembly with the bottom cover removed, showing the reverse lockout lever with the shift rod out of the way. When the key is out of the lock cylinder, this lever is in a position that engages the notch at the back end of the shift rod to keep the shift lever from being moved out of reverse. It also prevents the key from being removed if the shift lever isn't in reverse.
Hopefully the contrast is sufficient for you to see it. Our home monitor is set with poor contrast. Looked OK in the camera display.
Whatcha need to do is put the car in neutral and disassemble the shifter assembly to point of removing the plastic bottom cover. Turn the key to the accessory position to move the reverse lockout lever. Reassemble and reattach the shifter assembly to the floor of the car. Check to see if it's OK. If not, redo. It can be tricky.
The photo in the next post shows how the notch at the back end of the shift rod fits with the reverse lockout lever when the key is out of the car.
