Yes, groan could be severely worn pads. If you can see your rotors through the openings in the wheel, check for deep scoring. That's usually a sign that you've burnt through your pads. Those deep scores will also squeak at low-speed braking.
If you just put new belts on last year, then I'd suspect your squealing is not the belts, but the harmonic balancer on it way out. Especially if it's mainly squealing at idle.
