Recently did a head gasket replacement - after reinstall everything good for about a week, then all of a sudden engine would hesiste to start - there would be a starter click then after turning ignition off and back on it would fire. Car sat for 2 days then battery appeared to be drained.

Yesterday after charging the battery, i attached the positive cable and then when i attached the negative cable I immediately hear this sizzle noise with smoke visible over near the intake manifold

Turns out smoke is coming from the back of the starter solenoid. The only ground wires i disconnected for head gasket replacement were the ones from the transmission casing and a ground from the inner wheel well to the intake manifold throttle plate. It does not make sense to me that this would occur with the ignition off

Is this a grounding issue or is the starter just fried?
