you might want to also inspect the ground cable and its contacts on all its ends - on the battery side, on the radiator cross-member and where it bolts onto the tranny case.
To my belief you didn't check it for the last click when you switched off the ignition the last time before those two days when it remained in the ON position and ate your battery. It isn't designed to be hot for a long and it died (burnt, fried) in first two-three hours of those two days. And when you re-attached your re-charged battery, it was the proof round for this poor boy.
So (most probably) you're now to replace the solenoid (or the whole starter unit should you have a spare one) *_AND_* to trace the wiring to find out why it stopped getting enough current 2-3 days ago. Otherwise the story will repeat itself sooner or later (more sooner rather than later).
The engine unit gets the ground from the tranny case while most of the other electric units get it off the car body which is grounded to the battery negative pin at the radiator cross-member wire.
