Can't install clutch slave cylinder

I mated a new gearbox to my engine today, and when I went to install the clutch slave cylinder it just will not fit between the pressure plate and the gearbox chain case. I do have the spacer tool installed in the clutch fingers, but it's not enough. At first I couldn't even get it past the pressure plate housing (the outermost part that holds the fingers), but was finally able to persuade it past that, but now the "nose" of the slave will not go past the fingers.
This slave cylinder was a pretty tight fit when I replaced it some time ago, but now with the new gearbox it's tighter than ever. The dowels between the engine block and the gearbox are all in place, and all the bolts are in, etc, so I'm pretty sure the gearbox isn't mislocated in some way relative to the engine.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I'm wondering if my pressure plate (Borg & Beck) is wrong, or is just a difficult variety (and I might have better luck with a Sachs or something).
