I'll give this method a try, and if it doesn't work I can punch out the dowel pins as the other poster suggested. I understand what you mean about pushing the release bearing on all the way, but even if I leave the release bearing (and the bellows) off and just try to fit in the slave cylinder alone it won't go in with the pressure plate in place on the flywheel. I do see that Bentley says you have to install the slave cylinder with the pressure plate. I kinda tried that already, and it didn't look like it would work so backed out, but I'll try it again.
The last time I changed one of these was on a '92 S, and on that one once the spacer tool was in place on the pressure plate I was able to remove and replace the slave cylinder (with release bearing and bellows) without having to disturb the pressure plate. I guess I shouldn't generally expect it to work that way.
