Modifying vacuum advance

Hey guys, has anyone ever modified their vacuum advance to mimic a commemorative edition one? I have heard about it on other forums, but never seen a good walk-thru. I have a ton of spares lying around and was thinking about trying it if anyone knows how.
Looking underneath, it looks like there is a stopper on the side of the arm, but the arm seems to travel in and out, not side to side. It seems to be stopped by the thicker part of the arm itself that can't travel in the small hole. By looking at it, I would imagine you would just grind down the thicker part so that more travel can be achieved, thus advancing or retarding the timing under boost? Or am I way off?
