the car would actually move forward as it went into first (with clutch disengaged!!!!). Turns out the clutch disk was covered in oil and crud - the rear engine seal had been leaking oil which ended up all over the disk etc causing the disk to stick until there was enough force to unstick it from (i guess) the flywheel. does that make sense?
have you got much oil leaking out under the front of the motor?
