It might be worth mentioning that you have to put the key into the cylinder and turn it just a little bit, about an eighth of a turn or less as I recall, to push the pin in. Normally, you can only depress the pin if the inner portion of the cylinder is positioned just so. The pin is spring loaded out, so if the pin is intact it makes me wonder how/why it retracted enough to allow the cylinder to come out.
I agree with the other posters though, try cleaning the cylinder to remove any water soluble and non-water soluble contamination (unstick it), lube it with some light oil, then try depressing the pin (as above) and reinstalling the cylinder and see if it stays put. There's a rectangular slot in the bottom of the cylinder that will have to fully engage the tab at the bottom of the housing before the cylinder will seat fully.
If the cylinder won't stay in I suspect it's either because the pin is worn or broken, or the hole that the pin is supposed to engage is messed up somehow.
