Differences between 1981 and 1987 transmissions? Posted by Pyrrhic [Email] (#1124) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Pyrrhic) on Tue, 1 Jan 2013 13:42:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My car needs a new transmission as there is some internal play that keeps me from shifting precisely. It's not the coupling, bushings, engine mounts, etc. A Saab master mechanic at my dealership looked through the car and tells me I have to either rebuild it or install another one. This is where I am at now.
My car is a 1987 8 valve, non turbo, five speed, over 250,000 km. This is an early model 1987 with the slant nose but old school brakes.
I have the chance to get a 1981 8 valve engine with a 5 speed transmission for about $120. The seller says the engine and transmission have close to 200,000 km and ran flawlessly until pulled out of the car. The car was given a turbo engine and another lower mileage transmission with Type 7 primaries.
I am interested in the transmission only, and might have someone to buy the engine once I separate them.
I imagine the differences between a 1987 and a 1981 transmissions are few if any. Am I wrong? What am I looking at?
The alternative is a Type 6 transmission for $420, or a Type 7 for $540.
