EZK with LPT on non-t motor Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Thu, 3 Jan 2013 08:40:10 In Reply to: Re: Maybe, but..., aka oldsaab, Tue, 1 Jan 2013 15:32:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Frankly, I've heard that it is better to run an originally non-turbo'ed motor that was converted to LPT using the EZK system. APC is great, but it ONLY affects boost. If you are running in LPT mode, there is often very little for the APC to do. You'd have to set a very low "base" boost so that your "max" boost was still in the "low pressure" range.
With EZK, you fix the boost to a nominally low value (like base boost for an 8v or so, 4-6 PSI) via the wastegate & leave it alone (no APC valve needed or wanted). The EZK, when it detects knock, can retard the spark to prevent further knock, and this is often much more effective, AND has a much finer ability to control for knock.
This combination of spark retard and boost bleed-off was what made the combined DI/APC system such an advancement on the 2.3l 9000s. DI/APC first retards spark, and only after it has run out of that will it pull the boost. The 9000 Turbos with DI/APC are said to be rather more powerful (and a hell of a lot more fun) than the specs suggest, AND are more powerful than the 9000 Aeros with Trionic that came after.
The main difference between DI/APC and LH to the Trionic is that DI/APC and LH only keep you from blowing the motor up, while Trionic will keep your motor fully "inside the envelope" specified by the programming...
I converted my 1986 CV to DI/APC and performance was excellent with a 190 HP "red box" for the DI/APC. I don't think I can recall the boost ever dropping, there was simply so much spark retard available. Put a nice glaze on my clutch disc, too...
