I'm pretty certain the ABS computer throws the light up in response to the overall system voltage drop, as the battery is getting down to its last few available electrons. I've experienced the same thing (ABS light when battery low) during a "no charge" failure. As you described in your first post, lots of crazy things start to happen under this condition. I wouldn't worry about the ABS system -- it just didn't like the low voltage.
The charge warning light is wired in series with the green wire to the D+ connector on the alternator. If the bulb is burned out, it is the same as having the green/white wire disconnected, which definitely can result in a total "no charge" condition (definitely experienced this). That's not to say that some cars may not be able to survive this condition (say, still charge at higher RPMs), but I haven't seen that.
If the *wrong* bulb is installed (different wattage will have a different resistance), then you will get the charging behavior that I think Simon is describing. The following text is from page 321-1 of Bentley:
When replacing the charging system warning bulb, be sure
to use the correct 2.0 watt replacement bulb. A similar 1.2 watt
bulb (with black socket base) will also fit in this location. If the
smaller bulb is installed, the battery will not charge correctly at
idle. The light will also go out at a higher rpm. See an authorized
Saab parts department for additional information.
