I, too, prefer the old brakes. They actually do help sometimes, when stuck in snow, to help "fool" the differential. When you feel one wheel start to spin, you can put on the handbrake to slow the spinning wheel and transfer power to the other wheel. Sort of a primitive traction control.
And the new-style rear-handbrake brakes have just as many problems. The only advantage of them is that more parts are available.
I like having studs too, and soccer balls make great winter wheels because they are so narrow!
You know, the old 99s had something even cooler: front handbrake, drum-in-rotor-hat type! That was a marvel of engineering in its time. Might have even been the first incidence of drum-in-hat handbrakes in automobiles.
