Yeah, 87 and earlier had totally different hub/rotor/brake setup, including a Front e-brake.
You do have to swap out the hub - but it's not nearly as big a deal as you seem to think it is, a cap and one 32mm nut (once the wheel and caliper are out of the way). They include the wheel bearing, and used is just fine.
My guess on the reasoning of stud vs bolt is mostly that it's far more likely to bend a stud than strip threads in the hub, and it's easier to replace a damaged bolt than a stud. Cross-threading is really the only way that could have happened (well, maybe MASSIVE over tightening).
