I'd opine that it could be manufacturing cost that led to the switch. It makes the hub simpler, and it is one less part (the stud) to have to stock. They need to thread something on either way, and the price of a lug nut vs lug bolt is probably inconsequential in the quantities they'd be buying.
As for a stripped hole in a late hub, you might be able to heli-coil it. With the right size drill, you enlarge the hole, then thread it, then insert a stainless steel "coil", which becomes the new threads.
A problem they found early on was that the steel wheels, being thinner, let the bolts thread further past the hub flange. They could then, accumulate rust on the exposed tip, and strip the hole when removed. They sold - for a while - shorter bolts for the steel wheels...
