I ditched the passive and went active. It was a far bigger job to do than I thought it was based on the DIY and FAQ reviews I read. For example, the chassis attach point bracket is not below the rear vent windows.....so, I harvested a pair from a 1993, and had them seam sealed and bolted to the chassis along with a few well placed welds.
The headliner came out of the 1993 for material replacement and installation to fill the gaps from the passive belt frames. Location of the upper bolt for the lap belt is too low, so the B pillar interior covers have to be modified ( I didn't want to move the bolt location upwards ). Even the passive belts affect the visor attach points on the outboard sides.....you have to use either earlier or later model visors for them to look right.
So, my answer is no, I don't use the passive any longer and glad I made the conversion, but I hope to NEVER go back and do it again. NO to 1989 models.....but, then I just bought a 1989 convertible, but the belt system is different in the vert thank god.
Having said all that, do you need any of the visors or the mechansims for spares? I plan to keep the upper frame and use it for a window net when the next Chumpcar is constructed.
