'Sudden' brake fluid color change?

1990 n/a 16v, Valvoline DOT4 changed within last 6 mos.
I've had this car for 14 yrs, & this is the first time I've experienced this. I change the brake fluid every 2 yrs/30k mi, & try to flush the clutch once a year. I used to use Castrol LMA DOT 4 exclusively, but over the past few years it's disappeared from the local parts shelves, so I've been using Valvoline "DOT 3 & 4".
Today, while checking the oil, I noticed that there was a dribble of brake fluid out from the reservoir cap & pooled onto the top of the reservoir. I wiped it off & opened the reservoir, & was surprised to see how brown the fluid already had become! I even pulled a small amount out, just to make sure I wasn't seeing the color of the 'varnish' inside the reservoir.
Is the fluid leaking from the cap & the rapid color change indicative of some particular brake system (or component) problem? Or is it possible that I got a 'bad batch' of fluid (not DOT 4)?
Anyone experienced anything similar?
Any suggestions of what to check and/or test?
