The engine end plate has an access hole in it below the starter to get to the bolts that hold the torque convertor to the flex plate (what they call a flywheel on automatic transmissions). To get an engine separated from an automatic transmission, you need to remove those bolts. The bolts are fairly large and the bolt heads sit flat on the back of the flex plate. You can stick a large socket through the access hole in the engine cover and put it on a bolt head, and that will keep the flex plate (flywheel) from turning.
The diagnostic socket is in all classic 900s. doesn't mater what kind of transmission the car has. It is a 6-prong socket in the lower left of the fuse box. Connecting the pin at 6:00 with the pin at 2:00 with a jumper will bump the starter. Very convenient for doing a harmonic balancer removal.
