Same thing happened to me, not so long ago, in a traffic jam just south of Québec city (four hours north of my home in Vermont). Boy, was that scary! The car broke! In Canada! I noticed the wipers were going slower than they normally do, so took a look at the volt gauge (12v! Oh no!), turned everything off, got off the road, and investigated. The green wire had fallen off the alternator. Phew! Fixable. Since I dared not stop the engine, I took out my crimping pliers (of course I had these with me. I was in Canada! I never leave home without them) and put a new end on the wire. Re-attaching it nearly stalled the engine, but volts went back up and I drove back to Vermont in a cold sweat.
