Aux volt gauge saved me

My cabin aux volt gauge didn't shoot right up to 14v as usual when I started the engine yesterday, telling me there was a charging issue somewhere. I drove my 85 to work and back and the gauge would bounce between 12 and 14v. I first thought it was a problem with the gauge, but I confirmed that it was showing me the actual voltage by measuring voltage at the cig. lighter and then at the battery.
I didn't think I'd get so lucky, but it turned out that the main ground wire was loose at the alternator. I replaced that wire with a braided strap over 5 years ago, and I guess it got a bit loose over time.
It's nice to know that this old vdo gauge probably saved me from getting stranded somewhere.
It's also a good reminder to everyone here to check that connection every few years, and also that a loose or bad ground at the alternator WON'T show up as a no charging fault in the battery lights on the dash.
