I guess my concern would be moisture retention leading to rust - I'm already dealing with that with the fiberglass mat in our 1989, and that is on the inside of the car - outside must be way worse! Nascar wouldn't really have that problem though - no snow + salt and the cars are probably on pretty robust maintenance programs (regularly stripped down I bet, and don't need to last many years anyway)...
I'm sure roxul would work fine on the inside also. That stuff is extremely fire retardant... but same problem wicking moisture - any fiberous insulation will do that I suppose... what we really need is moisture proof and non-combustible... something like a fire-proof spray foam?
