gah... I'm in the middle of replacing #2... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 12:45:45 In Reply to: cat heat shield, rbc851, Mon, 17 Jun 2013 12:04:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have most of the interior pulled from the car only to find the front bolt is completely unidentifiable due to rust... almost looks like someone welded a nut on there like many here do, but this was never dug into by a saab guy... may be the original heat shield... there was not much left of it!
Is it really discontinued? I got one from eeuro only a couple years ago... that's the one I'm using - I procrastinated this for a while, knowing how much of a pia it is...
My indy "cheats" and screws the new heat shield to the old one. I can see why. It is the only way to keep the labour cost manageable. I don't see any problem with screwing appropriately bent sheet metal in there, and as long as there is enough of the old shield to work with, I would strongly recommend it. It is a miserable job to do properly if you live in the saltbelt/rustbelt like me!
One other consideration would be, are you using an aftermarket cat? They normally have some sort of heat shield already. Whether that is enough is probably somewhat debatable... but a reputable source said not to bother with fixing a heat shield in that situation... in many cases an aftermarket cat is shaped poorly to fit into the heat shield tunnel - easy to make it rattle... I fought with aligning that on our 1993 for a long time and it is still not perfect... in spite of this, I am putting a heat shield on with an aftermarket cat once again... fwiw, the old heat shield was practically non-existent for 2 years with an aftermarket cat, and all the wiring looks perfect today... the floorpan rust however is very depressing... what a mess!
