Antenna replacement - help!

So my antenna broke off. I pulled the top piece out and was able to get the antenna motor out, the old sleeve and the rest of the antenna and plastic piece out. Put it back together and into the car. Got the new plastic gear lined up and the antenna was pulled into the motor.
BUT, here's the problem. The new sleeve will NOT fit into the top of the motor fitting....It is too big in diameter to fit thru the gold colored fitting at the top of the antenna tube. I could put it in the the underside of the antenna tube, but then when you put it all back together, I don't see how you would get the plastic gear piece to feed in.
Does the top of the antenna tube (the piece that pokes up thru the car body come off somehow?
What am I missing?
Thanks for any help on this!
